We're not Satanists

Ok, it's been said. You can now remove this statement from all of your webpages.

Have you ever stopped to consider whom this sentence is addressing? Who associates us with Satanism nowadays? Right-wingers, certainly, but do you really think they'll stop believing it just because you, who they've already decided is an instrument of the Great Deceiver, say so? Continuing to volunteer this blatantly defensive statement only makes us look suspicious. To someone completely ignorant of us, this merely instills the question of "Why would I be thinking these people are Satanic? Is there something bad about them that I'm missing?"

If you call yourself Wiccan, the listener is likely either going to not have a clue what that means (at which point you can tell them), or they already know about Wicca. The only person associating Wicca with Satanism is YOU.

The only other thing connecting us with Satanism is the term "witch". If you call yourself a witch, you take the good with the bad. You've chosen to adopt a term that has for hundreds of years had very bad connotations, and not just because the Big Bad Christians flamed your lovely religion. You can't redefine a word and then blame the rest of the world for not following along.

Incidentally, if we're so open-minded and tolerant of other religions, what's up with the anti-Satanism anyway? No, we're not Satanists, but we're not Jews, Hindus, or Zoroastrians either, but no one states that disclaimer.
